Washington National’s aging Terminal 1 is set for a major $933 million overhaul, replacing its outdated "banjo" concourse with nine larger gates and a new headhouse. The project also includes a secure connector to Terminal 2, easing transfers between the two facilities.
Passengers will face longer treks, with walks of up to half a mile from check-in to gates. The rebuild appears to allocate space for a future Southwest Airlines lounge, though no official confirmation has been made.
Construction is slated to begin in the coming years, aiming to modernize the airport’s oldest terminal while accommodating growing passenger traffic. The project is part of broader efforts to enhance the travel experience at one of the nation’s busiest airports.
