A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Orlando made an unscheduled return to Atlanta on Sunday after pilots detected smoke and fumes in the cockpit shortly after departure. The crew donned oxygen masks and instructed passengers to brace for landing as a precaution. The Boeing 757 touched down safely without incident.
Following landing, smoke was reported in the rear of the aircraft while it was still on the taxiway. Emergency responders were dispatched, and nearly 200 passengers exited the plane using evacuation slides. No injuries were reported during the evacuation.
Delta arranged for a replacement aircraft to continue the journey to Orlando. The airline is investigating the cause of the fumes and smoke, which remained unclear at the time of reporting. The original aircraft was taken out of service for inspection.
