Kansas voters rejected a constitutional amendment that would have scrapped the state's current appointment process for Supreme Court justices in favor of direct elections.
The measure was referred to the ballot by the Republican-controlled legislature after years of friction with a court that has ruled against the party on issues including abortion rights.
The result preserves the existing merit-based selection system, at least for now, though supporters of the amendment have signaled they may try again in a future election cycle.
